While we usually have class indoors, kids just want to have fun. The best place to have a fun time is outside in the sun; get away from the screens and out into the real world with your friends.  How do you have fun in the sun?  In this model lesson for young-learner English teachers, we go through parts of the Our World, Second Edition unit "Fun in the Sun", talking about things we like to do outdoors and with our friends. We will look at using writing and a project as formative assessment, and also show how the online 'Spark' platform can be used to provide at-home digital practice (auto-graded to make a teacher's life easier!) and the insights we can get from how the learners practice.

In this session, we give a brief overview of systematic synthetic phonics for beginning readers, using a series of decodable readers from our partner, Nelson. Then we dive into a model lesson that would be suitable for Grade K or Grade 1 learners using these decodable readers. In the story, ten kids want the same pup. What will they do? Let's read along to find out while also developing our decoding and high-frequency word abilities.

Our culture and our identity are important to all of us. Exploring and understanding culture and identity can promote building peaceful and inclusive societies. What big ideas to explore in an English language learning lesson! With Pathways, Third Edition, we can think critically about these concepts through listening and speaking activities while also developing skills such as note-taking and using adjective clauses. Join us for this model lesson for English teachers to see how we can tackle these diverse aspects of the Pathways program in an engaging, scaffolded way.

When learners are using a National Geographic Learning program and making full use of Spark, the supporting digital platform, it is a simple process for teachers and institutions to track student progress. The Assignments, Assessments and Gradebook are powerful tools that allow educators to gather performance data and turn this information into insights about individual and class achievement. This enables teachers to make best use of possibly their most valuable resource — classroom time — to focus time where it is most needed and propel students to higher levels of performance. In this session, we explore each of these three tools in more detail, modeling how they can be used in helping our learners become ever more successful.

Helping to develop young learners' ideas on sustainability can be done during English language lessons even when the learners have limited language to work with.  In this model lesson for English teachers using a Pre-A1 level of the Imagine series for young learners, we look at some examples of how we can address sustainability through the lesson content and context to develop positive values around food.  Helping learners understand and apply the idea to a situation allows us to formatively assess their development in areas that will be important in their future lives.

With Spark, the all-in-one-place digital support platform for National Geographic Learning programs, it's easy to plan and prepare lessons, deliver engaging classes, assign practice work and track student results. To get set up for success, there are some steps to go through that are ideally done before classes begin. These include setting up your course, registering (or preparing to register) the students, explore the teaching resources, and possibly even plan out your practice assignments in advance. In this webinar, we will give a quick tour of the main uses of Spark for a teacher and show how simple it is to do the tasks above to be fully set up for success with Spark.

TEACHER TRAINER

OVERVIEW

Research shows that quality early childhood education and enhanced school readiness lead to positive benefits through to adulthood.  But what is school readiness?  How do we prepare a very young learner (VYL) for school?  In this session, we look briefly at the importance of developing school readiness and what ‘school readiness’ means.  We will then look at a range of approaches and activities for VYL classrooms, and for parents at home, to help the children in our care do as well as they can in the world that is waiting for them in school and beyond.  Bring your ideas and questions, too, as we explore and share together.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Andrew Tiffany is a Teacher Trainer for National Geographic Learning currently based in Taipei.  Andrew’s degrees are in physics and he has been working in education his entire adult life, beginning as a teacher of physics and math at university.  Later, he taught EFL and ELA for preschool, primary and high school students, and has worked over 10 years as trainer at schools and businesses in Asia.  He has worked with or trained thousands of teachers and likes to do so because, through them, he can help even more students around the world.  When possible, he still teaches school students in his free time.

OVERVIEW

Most of us have had experience using projects in our Young Learner or Very Young Learner lessons, and many of us know the benefits of doing them.  Perhaps few of us have done projects in an online, blended, or asynchronous learning environment, though.  Despite the apparent challenges of a different setting, projects still play a crucial role in formative and summative assessment as well as in developing a range of skills and abilities in our learners.  In this session, we will look at the considerations and tasks at each stage – before-project, during-project and after-project – that make our projects work well in any learning setting.  Join us as we explore plans for delivery of three specific projects – and contribute to the plan for a fourth project with the other attendees in the session!

OVERVIEW

When we teach Young Learners, we want to take advantage of all the tools and resources we can get our hands on – great curriculum, well-developed activities, engaging visuals, and so on. Another element that can also propel student learning is the use of a Learning Management System (LMS). An LMS can aid teachers in building student motivation, developing good learning habits, aiding memory and retention, and also in gaining another committed partner – the learners’ parents – to help the students succeed in their learning. In this session, we will explore these ideas in more detail and discuss practical ways that you can use an LMS system like that found in National Geographic Learning’s young learner programs – Our World 2nd edition and Look – to great effect.

OVERVIEW
Teaching very young learners can be very rewarding, and yet it’s also very different to teaching primary school-age or older students. To lead very young learners successfully and productively in class and through project work, we need to take account of the large variations in ability across the VYL age ranges as well as the developmental needs of their whole person. In this session, we will briefly look at some of the typical age-based differences in the physical, socio-emotional and cognitive & language areas. We will also share a lot of best practices regarding what to focus on for your students’ development AND discuss methods and tips for making you successful in the VYL classroom. As much as possible, we will try to show you (not just tell you) how this can be done.
