Teaching English to teenagers can be challenging, but it can also be exciting and rewarding. Join us to learn how to engage your teenage English learners with exciting, real-world content and projects that promote 21st century skills, such as technology integration, critical thinking, and creativity. Examples from the second edition of Impact will be used to show what engaging and inspiring teen English learners looks like in practice. You will leave this webinar with new ideas to get your teens involved in your class, with each other, and with the world around them.

Dr. Joan Kang Shin is a Professor of Education at George Mason University and the Associate Dean for Faculty Success in the College of Education and Human Development. Dr. Shin specializes in teaching ESL/EFL/EAL to young learners and teenagers and has provided professional development programs and workshops to English language teachers in over 100 countries around the world. She is a Series Editor of National Geographic Learning’s young learner programs Welcome to Our WorldOur World, and Explore Our World, as well as the teen program Impact, and an author of the professional development title Teaching Young Learners English.

Dr. JoAnn (Jodi) Crandall is Professor Emerita and former Director of the Language, Literacy and Culture Ph.D. Program, and Co-Director of the MA TESOL Program at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Prior to joining the faculty at UMBC in 1992, she was Vice President of the Center for Applied Linguistics in Washington, DC. Dr. Crandall is a Series Editor, with Dr. Joan Kang Shin, for Our World, National Geographic Learning’s program for young learners of English; Explore Our World, a light and lively version of Our World; Welcome to Our World, a three-level pre-primary series for very young learners of English; and Impact, Second Edition, for teenage learners of English.

Join us for a session featuring Our World Series editors Joan Kang Shin and Jodi Crandall and the publishers of Our World to learn about a recent study that explored the efficacy of Our World for young learners of English. The session will feature an overview of the best-selling series and a summary of the key findings from the perspective of students, teachers, and parents.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Dr. Joan Kang Shin is a Professor of Education at George Mason University and the Associate Dean for Faculty Success in the College of Education and Human Development. Micah White is an Executive Editor who joined National Geographic Learning in 2021 and manages the development of primary and secondary ELT programs. He has an M.A. in English Language and Literature, has taught English to university students in the U.S. and to young learners in South Korea, and since 2008 has focused on the research and development of ELT materials for students and teachers around the globe. Micah lives in Beacon, New York, with his wife, two sons, three cats, and basset hound. 

Sherrise Roehr is a publisher at National Geographic Learning. She has more than 25 years of professional experience in the English language teaching field. Through her role as head of the National Geographic Learning editorial teams based in Boston, Sherrise has overseen the development of many internationally successful, best-in-class ELT titles, including the award-winning  Our Worldprogram for primary students, Imagineprogram for secondary, World Linkfor adults, and the new Reflectseries for academic students.  Sherrise is well-known for her game-changing approach to material design, creating content that leverages National Geographic resources effectively to make learning meaningful, engaging and relevant for both teachers and learners of all ages.
