The pace of change today is incredibly fast. Students are experiencing many new things in the world of technology including (of course) artificial intelligence (AI) ideas and tools. Sometimes the materials we are using in class are getting rapidly left behind ... As teachers, what do we do about this?

In this model lesson for English teachers of teenagers, we use a unit talking about 'Cool Apps and Gadgets' and identify the parts that are becoming out-of-date. We then give examples of how to keep on-track with the basic learning objectives of the unit by altering the activities to involve things that the students are seeing and working with in their own world, such as AI. We also show how to use activities to practice timeless skills — future readiness skills — that will help our students, no matter how the future changes, skills like critical thinking, empathy, visual literacy and collaboration.
